In January 1959, nine young hikers set out from the Ural Polytechnic Institute in Sverdlovsk, carrying with them little more than standard winter gear, notebooks, and a shared sense of confidence.

They were not thrill-seekers chasing danger, nor inexperienced students underestimating the environment. Each member of the group had completed demanding expeditions before. Several were engineers in training. Their leader, Igor Dyatlov, was known for his calm decision-making and meticulous planning.

The goal of the expedition was ambitious but reasonable: a winter crossing of the northern Ural Mountains to earn the highest level of hiking certification available in the Soviet Union. The route would take them through remote terrain, but it was mapped, studied, and discussed. This was not a reckless journey into the unknown — it was a calculated challenge.

Early entries in their journals reflect routine discomfort rather than real worry. The cold was persistent but expected. Progress was slow but steady. Photographs taken along the way show smiling faces, shared jokes, and moments of ordinary camaraderie. If there were tensions or doubts, they were not recorded. Everything about the early days suggests competence and cohesion.

Congratulations.
